Maury P Says, "You Are The Father!"
I have no idea why anyone would imagine the following scenario but, John Davies did. Let’s say that one day Natural Born Killers is walking down the street and bumps into Pretty Woman. The two hit it off and very quickly fall in love. The next night they decide to go to a rave at the house of The Baytown Outlaws where they take a lot of acid, maybe enough to make Jimi Hendrix jealous, and go back to Pretty Woman’s house where they make a child. That child’s name is Hobo with a Shotgun. That’s the best way I can describe this one. Hobo with a Shotgun was another trailer-turned-movie from the Grindhouse movie(s) so, let’s jump in. The other was Machete and you can read my blog on this one here.
Here's How I Got Those DNA Results
I say Natural Born Killers because of the psychotic nature of this movie and Pretty Woman because the hobo does what he does mainly for a prostitute that he falls in love with. It is the group called “the plague” that added The Baytown Outlaws flavor to this casserole. These fellows were very inserting to me, and I found them to be a creative element in this movie with tactics you would see on any Marvel Comics page. They drug a coffin behind their motorcycles in which to carry their captive and had crossbows that would hang people. Boy did they put the crossbows to work.
Hobo With a Shotgun - It Is What It Is
The title, Hobo with a Shotgun, says a lot about this movie. I’m not going to waste time on the plot, you can read it here. There was a psychedelic surreal feeling in this movie with a lot of color use, smoke, etc. It’s filled with blood and gore on a Mortal Kobmat or Hammer Films level. The blood is bright red and exaggerated while the gore is semi-realistic. Hobo with a Shotgun takes place in a city that certainly is surreal – it’s how I think that Jared Leto’s version of the Joker from Suicide Squad would create the world. Everyone was corrupt, criminals ran the city, and even the police enjoyed entertainment hosted by the criminals. There was no hope for anyone who found themselves in this city, not even a hobo who hops off a train.
The Sad Theme of Hobo With a Shotgun
I don’t know that “fun” is the right word to describe this movie but, if you like odd stuff, Hobo With a Shotgun is great. As one might expect, it is ultra-violent. Shotgun blast after shotgun blast rids the city of crime one criminal at a time through the end of the film. Regardless of the number of criminals the vigilante disposes of, he never loads or purchases more shells. Considering that he cleans the town up, this adds an unrealistic comical flavor to the movie that takes the edge off. As scumbag after scumbag meets his 12 gauge and girls dance in the blood spray of decapitated citizens who owe the city boss money, we draw close to an unhappy ending. Because heads up, there is not a happy ending for our hobo with a shotgun.
In one scene, the hobo talks through the glass at a hospital to a group of babies in bassinets. He explains that most will grow up to use drugs and be homeless in the city they are in and the ones who don’t, will supply drugs to the ones who do. Hobo With a Shotgun’s theme is wrapped up in this one scene. As violent and weird as this movie was, I would watch again and I did enjoy it. It was very psychotic and at times troubling but is on my would watch again list. The writing was good, the production quality was there, and the story and acting matched these.
Happy Ending to a Blog About a Movie With an Unhappy Ending
I was left with a question about Hobo With a Shotgun though. The hobo told the surviving plague m ember she was “…not going anywhere”, referring to his prostitute friend, and the plague member left him alone. Why did he do this? I didn’t catch the answer. If anyone knows, drop the answer in the comments. Feel free to add your thoughts on Hobo With a Shotgun too.
