Surf Nazis Must Die, A B Movie Gamble
I ran across this film and knew from the title it was going to be B Movie gold…or not. It turned out to be maybe a B Movie pewter/silver mix. What I mean is that it had some decency to it but also a lot of “why am I wasting my watch time” to it too. Let’s talk about Surf Nazis Must Die. This is an odd film by Troma Team, who also did The Toxic Avenger.
Anarchy and Beach Domination with a Nazi Gang Twist
Surf Nazis Must Die takes place after a disaster that left an area in anarchy. Amidst this anarchy, gangs took over the beach area and fights for control and loot were commonplace. Anyone who came to the beach area, would be robbed by a gang who would then sell their stuff for money. There were several gangs and they had themes. One was a group of 80s hair, Converse wearing skateboards. Another was a 3-piece Asian martial arts gang. A motorcycle gang was present complete with boots and rags. Both finally and obviously, you had the Nazi group that were surfers. Some of which had adopted Nazi names to go with their persona. Eventually the Nazi group kills the wrong guy, and his angry mother avenges him through guerilla warfare involving turning the gangs against each other.
What I Liked About Surf Nazis Must Die
There were a couple of things about this movie that I liked. First, one of the surfers was named “Claw” and he resembled the main character from A Clockwork Orange. I have always been a fan of this movie, so it was fun to see this resemblance. The font used in this movie was great in my opinion. I wish I could find it and use it. It was bright red and had a splattered look to it. The revenge plot was great, and this angry mama took said revenge thoroughly. When she finally catches up to the last two surfers for the finale, their demise is great. I’ve rarely seen a boat used as a weapon, but one is in Surf Nazis Must Die. The end is the best though – you think there will be a fight, nope. There’s only a surprise bang.
Conclusion
Watching this movie took me back a little. I didn’t research which came first, this movie or the game but, one scene has the Nazi leader being lowered down at a meeting on a forklift. This reminded me of the old arcade cabinet Pit Fighter. I played this as Skateland USA a lot but always put in the quarters just to get to the second fight. I was no good and the difficulty was up too much for me. I will certainly, given the opportunity, play Pit Fighter again but, I don’t think this movie will ever surf across my screen again. Saying that though, I don’t regret having watched it either.
