House of Whipcord: A Mysterious Dedication

House of Whipcord was NOT What I Expected!

Here’s another film that grabbed my attention by the poster art. House of Whipcord popped up on Tubi recently and I partook in this surprisingly intriguing film. When the film first started rolling, I must admit, I had concerns that I wouldn’t make it through and be able to pen anything. The night rolled on and House of Whipcord kept me locked in and turned out to be nothing like what I expected. I’ll explain in the following prose.

Honestly, I was concerned that House of Whipcord wouldn’t be up my alley. I’m not really into sadistic movies or torture stuff. I am a philosopher and I have my thoughts on these things but, this blog is not where I’ll share those. My expectation was not met and pleasantly so. Soon, the story began to unfold, and I realized there was a lot of plot and suspense in House of Whipcord. The element of surprise was used too – I mean, surprise the person you expect to be the hero is not.

House of Whipcord is not iPhone Friendly

A blog from Invisible Katana Artwork on House of Whipcord would not be complete without criticism. I’m not a negative person in real life. It may be the fact that I watched this on an iPhone 12 but, large portions of the movie were dark. Yes, it was dark in theme, vibe, etc. but I mean light quality. Often, it was difficult to see what was going on. This certainly added to the dungeon vibe. Everyone, except the main female, had a heavy English accent. Our main female was French. Accents on top of low volume on a smartphone also made following along tricky but, I was able to understand the story and it’s a good one.

An Odd Dedication Opens House of Whipcord

I’m an artist first and a blogger second. Artistically and curiously, the most intriguing piece of House of Whipcord was the opening dedication. Another movie with a timeless dedication is The Wizard of Oz. When we’re off to see the wizard, the dedication reads, “For nearly forty years this story has given faithful service to the Young in Heart, and Time has been powerless to put its kindly philosophy out of fashion. To those of you who have been faithful to it in return …and to the Young in Heart …we dedicate this picture.” House of Whipcord had the opening dedication of “This film is dedicated to those who are disturbed by today’s lax moral codes and who eagerly await the return of corporal and capital punishment…” Is this not a wild dedication? Where did this come from? Why is it there? Whose idea was this?

I couldn’t find a clear answer to any of these questions. Clearly, though, many people have noticed this because I found several articles that take notice of this eerie and unique dedication. Opinions on capital punishment aside, wow, what a wild way to start a movie off! You can read one of the articles I found that mentions this line and the writer on Dusty Video Box. I normally hold questions until the end but, if anyone knows more about this dedication, please leave some knowledge in the comments.

Littledean Jail is Now England's Most Offensive Museum

Y’all know we must touch on filming locations in a blog from Invisible Katana Artwork. The jail that was used for filming was the Littledean Jail in Littledean, Gloucestershire. This place was wild, and it turns out it still is. Really, it’s even wilder now! There are a ton of walkthroughs on YouTube if you’re interested. When I looked them up, I learned that the jail is now the UK’s most offensive museum. You can see one walkthrough highlighting this here. I watched briefly and learned that the museum has, for instance, an original Pogo the Clown suit that was worn and owned by John Wayne Gacy. My being in England one day is doubtful but, I am touring this place if I ever find myself there.

3 Strikes & You're Out - Just Like Me and House of Whipcord...Watch to Get the Reference

I don’t know that I’ll watch House of Whipcord again but, I do recommend it as a watch for people into odd movies, English movies, vintage horror, cult films, and just curious viewers. Don’t try to watch it on an iPhone though. Sit on your couch or recliner and throw Tubi or whatever on your smart TV for this one. If you’re looking for a Hostel movie, you’re not going to find it in this one. As I said, that stuff ain’t my cup of tea. Also, and again, if anyone knows anything about that odd dedication leave some info in the comments. Man, that still bugs me.
