I remember that wonderful day when my dad came home with one of the most life-changing purchases we ever made – a Nintendo! The details have left me but, my brother had Toys R Us cash or something and it was used to get this system. I had played an Atari, computer games, and probably a Nintendo but, this one was ours. My life changed that day. I learned how to waste time on a whole new level – a habit that followed me for a long time. Don’t misunderstand me though – I love video games! Let’s talk about the newest system I added to my collection – the Nintendo Switch.

I actually bought the system for my little girl…and me. We picked up some games too because what’s a video game system without games? Mario Cart 8 Deluxe, Animal Crossing, Hello Kitty Racing, and Adventure Time. I’ve only played the Mario Cart. While it is fun, there’s nothing like the original Super Mario Cart from Super Nintendo. I tried to explain this to my little gamer but, she just can’t understand. Soon and very soon, Skyward Sword and Breath of the Wild will be purchased as well. Those are for me and will consume several months of my life so, I have to time it right. I am a Legend of Zelda fan – still have my gold cartridge.
About the system though, it is great! I have to hand it to Nintendo. They have to be the most creative system designers out there. This system can be played three ways, as a “Gameboy” type setup, 1 or more players on the small screen, or on your TV. By “Gameboy” I mean that you hold the screen in front of you with the controllers attached to the sides. The second option is the take the controllers off of the sides and the screen then becomes a small TV screen to play on. This will allow at least 2 players and, I think even more if you have more than the 2 controllers that come with it. The Switch comes with a charging bay that connects to your TV. If you have the system in the bay, you can play the games on the TV screen. The system is super versatile which makes it so usable. Of course, you can play online, add controllers, buy cases, custom controllers, and all the other perks offered today. I can see our Nintendo Switch joining my family on all future road trips.
I’m not sure what all games are out there but, our local store had several to choose from. There are games for kids and adults alike. Obviously, most of the games are more kid-friendly but, we grownups have some options too. It does have a price tag on it though. The system costs right at $300.00 if you buy the regular version new. There are some custom systems out I believe but, I bought the system to play games on. I do recommend getting a case for yours when you pick it up though. I can see this system getting damaged easily.
I’ve played a few rounds of Mario Cart with my little gamer and enjoyed them all. She beats me most of the time but, I always win getting to spend time with her. My favorite power-up has to be that red turtle shell. I wish there was a cheat to always land those. I miss the old days of Game Genie and cheat code magazines. Anyway, I recommend this system for all ages and people.
