I think this Biohazard is considered Sci-Fi and I can see why, but it was borderline slasher too. This movie’s story was simple, but it was entertaining. The acting and overall film were well done too. You can read a summary of this film somewhere else; we’re just going to talk about the film here. Let’s get into it.
First off, I did not expect to enjoy this film as much as I did. I enjoyed it enough that I might watch it again one day when I can pay closer attention. This film had me at the monster. This creature looked like it came straight out of one of the classic 60s Sci-Fi B movies. The only difference was that the costume had 1980s technology on its side. Basically, you had a more realistic 1960s monster in this film which I loved. I think we get too carried away sometimes with how monsters look in films. They are often hyper-realistic. You lose something with these types of monsters in Sci-Fi, I think.
As I mentioned, this had a lot of 80s slasher elements to pair with the Sci-Fi plot. What do I mean? There were people being stalked by something. There were the ghastly murders with cheap special effects. Of course, there was the find the victim and scream before you realize you’re next turns in the story. The kills were not that creative but, they worked. It wasn’t Jason Voorhees-level work on the part of this monster. Speaking of Jason, the story also presented some Alien and Jason Goes to Hell vibes with some of the baby monsters’ looks and behaviors.
This movie had one of the strangest endings that have caught me off guard since Saw. Before we continue, I am in no way putting this film on the level of Saw. The ending is abrupt, almost makes no sense, and has a great build-up. I think that the abruptness of it is what really got me. I admit that I couldn’t listen to all the dialog so, maybe the ending makes more sense than I realize. I’m going to watch this one again one day and see if I’m right with this.
In closing, there were a couple of scenes that stood out to me. One, there is a super annoying old woman who is fussing at her husband while going on a drive. The conversation leads to an event in the story but, it seemed to be filler more than anything. Another scene has a man entering a room that looks like it is a storage area for 80s hairdryers. I remember these things from going to the salon with my mom. A local store had one once, but I didn’t want to spend the money for it. Looking back, I should have bought that. Sorry, I digress. This film is worth watching.
