The Backyard Casanovas - What a Find!

Looking back, I have no idea how I found the channel on YouTube named Bopflix, but it turned me on to The Backyard Casanovas. Wow, what a find. Bopflix describes their channel as follows:

“Bopflix Films specializing in vintage, roots and rock n roll music and subcultures (including rockabilly, rock n roll, rhythm and blues, western swing, blues, bluegrass, country, jazz, doo-wop, exotica, folk, garage, skiffle, punk) in the form of music videos, band sessions, live shows, promos and documentary” (2022).

A channel like this is a gold mine for a fellow like me. Countless hours now have been spent perusing their catalog and my bands to check out list has grown exponentially.

"Big Fat Mama" Cover by The Backyard Casanovas

Originally, I found The Backyard Casanovas covering a song called “Big Fat Mama” which was originally done by Hasil “Haze” Adkins and was released on the album Chicken Walk (1962). The Backyard Casanova’s version is similar but has a much louder and modern electric blues sound to it. You can watch the original video that caught my attention here. Follow the Bopflix channel while you’re there too – it’s a good move.

Hour Long Set from The Backyard Casanovas

Recently, I found an hour-long live set with The Backyard Casanovas and dug in. It was very impressive. I watched all the way through. Watch this awesome set for yourself here. There is very little crowd interference, and the sound is clear to be a live recording of this nature. Several songs and an encore are played by the group. There is a repeat in the encore, but it’s just as good the second time around. Covers seem to be The Backyard Casanova’s thing but, I can’t say with certainty that they don’t have their own stuff out there. Regardless, you need to hear these folks.

American Rockabilly Reaches as far as Duetchland

Another cool thing that surprised me about these American rockabilly players is that they are German. Deutschland is the home of these fellows. It’s fascinating to see that this musical genre has touched people and inspired musicians all over the world. Another fun fact, they dress the part too. Fashion trends are not my specialty but, they dress like they are out of the 1940s. Given an opportunity presents itself for me to see these folks live, it’s happening.

Conclusion
