White Zombie’s La Sexorcisto is an Energy Expierence

I want to point out that I use the word “album” but, “La Sexorcisto” is an experience more than an album. I listened while driving at work and when “La Sexorcisto” was finished, I had to sit in the lobby for a few minutes to come down from the energy brought in by this 14-track horror movie sample stuffed hard rock experience. As far as sampling goes, I think this is what makes the White Zombie sound. Some films that the band pulled from were Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!, Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Plan 9 from Outer Space, and even High School Confidential. It would be like the Wu-Tang without Chinese Kung Fu movies sampled in the tracks. Can you imagine that? Me either.

Sublime’s New Album is Phenomenal – A Must Listen

Heroin is a terrible thing and we have lost so many great people to this devil. The late Bradley Nowell of Sublime is in this number. I remember 1996 and hearing “What I Got” playing on all the rock stations I listened to. Sublime had such a unique sound, and they still do. I have never heard anything that has that Sublime style. In the 90s, grunge was still huge. Alice In Chains, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and many others were my favorites. Sublime, even though they sounded so different, were just as appealing. 1996 marked the release of Sublime’s third album which was self-titled. A few weeks later, also in 1996, marked the heroin overdoes of Bradley Nowell. This album, and most popular track “What I Got”, would make Sublime blow up. It is so unfortunate that Bradly never got to see the success of Sublime.

Another cool thing that surprised me about these American rockabilly players is that they are German. Deutschland is the home of these fellows. It’s fascinating to see that this musical genre has touched people and inspired musicians all over the world. Another fun fact, they dress the part too. Fashion trends are not my specialty but, they dress like they are out of the 1940s. Given an opportunity presents itself for me to see these folks live, it’s happening.

I’m odd in a lot of ways but certainly when it comes to music. There are groups sometimes that I just feel like I should be a listener of. Yeah Yeah Yeahs is one of these groups. I don’t recall how I originally came across them, but their name has been with me for a while. I think it was the name that sounded cool to me originally and got me interested. I recently had a classmate mention them in a post and it rekindled my curiosity. When they dropped a new album on Apple this month, I hit play on this 8 song experience. Let’s talk about the Yeah Yeah Yeahs album “Cool It Down” for a few minutes.

Jamey Johnson is unmistakable from a distance. From 50 yards away I recognized him due to his long hair and equally long beard. Musically, he sounds as good in person as he does on record. This to me is a test of a real musician/singer. So many people sing through computers now that you can’t tell who can sing anymore and who has a good sound engineer. To me, finding someone that sounds as good in person (or better) as they do on record is awesome.

According to Apple Music’s bio on these cats, Austin John and Dawna Zahn, the guitarist and vocalist respectively, moved to Nashville, TN from Central NY in 2014. The two were later joined by Hank Miles and Jason Smay. They had one mission. The same mission that most people who move to Nashville have – to start a successful band. They were inspired by their favorite bands from the 50s and 60s, which were not country western bands. Their influences and loves are American roots icons that include Etta James, Howlin’ Wolf, Little Richard, and Big Mama Thornton. Here’s what I mean about being caught off-guard. As soon as you hit play on this record, you are into what sounds like Big Mama Thornton over Eric Clapton. It’s soulful, it’s bluesy, and it’s right.

Poultricide by Jane Rose and the Deadend Boys (2011)

I heard the song “Treat Me Right” on Apple Music’s Rockabilly Rocking626.com channel and immediately went to the album to check out the rest. I say it all the time, but it is so uncommon anymore to find an album that is consistently good all the way through. I found one in Poultricide. I didn’t hear one track that I didn’t enjoy. I added several songs to my playlist including “Treat Me Right”, “Fool”, and “Hot Headed.” This album is very consistent while at the same time has a lot of different sounds too it. It reminds me of an old Elvis record in its simultaneous consistency and change. There is a strong upbeat rockabilly sound throughout the album but, sometimes it slows down to a “Love Me Tender” tempo. The song “Fool” had this vibe, in my opinion. Sometimes, it picks up to a harder and faster rockabilly sound too. For instance, “Hot Headed” has more of a Chuck Berry vibe to it.

Sublime Meets Scientist and Mad Professor inna L.B.C. (2001)

Scientist Meets Sublime features several songs taken from the lengthy catalog of the great Sublime. Sublime is a sound and genre, musically, of its own. The Sublime sound is a mash up of so many genres including Reggae, Ska, dub, and has a signature Long Beach, California style on top of that. I knew that these two giants pairing up would either be great or be a disaster. Knowing, how awesome Scientist is, my money was on this composure being great. Personally, I wasn’t let down or wrong. It was everything that I expected, knowing Scientist’s sound and that of Sublime too.
