Fascinating, Life Changing Quick Read

Self Mastery Through Conscious Autosuggestion

Anyone who has read most of my blogs knows that I am a fan of Wes Watson. A lot of what “Big Wes” talks about are Stoic ideas and one of those is the power of autosuggestion. I have been doing some research on the side on autosuggestion and find it intriguing and inspiring. Having a background and higher education in Philosophy and Psychology also inspires me in this research too. Emile Coue wrote the “bible” on autosuggestion so, I found it and read it – very impressive little book. Let’s talk about Self Mastery Through Conscious Autosuggestion.

Essentially Self Hypnotism

The basic idea of autosuggestion is in its essence hypnotism as far as I can understand. According to Coue, we have two selves. One is the conscious self and the other is the unconscious self. There are two forces active in our lives as well. Our will and our imagination are these two forces, and they collide often in daily life. Imagination always wins the fight. So, the idea is that if we can control our imagination then we control the outcome. Most people only are conscious of their will and pay no attention to the unconscious efforts of the imagination.

Same Board, Different Perspective

What is presented above may be a little tricky to follow. Here’s an example that Coue used in Self Mastery Through Conscious Autosuggestion to better explain this. Lay a plank on the ground that is 4’ long and 2’ wide and see how many people can walk across it, skip across it, run across it, dance across it, etc. You will find very few that will not do this. Now, move the same board to bridge the roofs of 2 buildings 50’ above the ground and you will find very few people who would do this. Even the same people that crossed the board on the ground will not do it now. The only thing that changed is their perception due to the elevation. Herein lies the power of our imagination.

What If We Controlled Our Imagination?

What if we gained control of this? If we decided what the imagination believed or didn’t believe, what could we accomplish? I read somewhere many years ago that the main purpose of the grueling training undergone by US Navy SEALs has one ultimate purpose. Proving to the trainee that when your mind says you must quit, your body can do 10% more. Monks and many cultures have used autosuggestion for centuries in the forms of mantras and creeds. When we say something enough to ourselves, good or bad, our mind eventually believes it. Suggestion has now transformed into autosuggestion. Of the two, only the latter really exists. Coue was well known for his daily saying, “Every day in every way I’m getting better and better.”

Listen to Self Mastery Through Conscious Autosuggestion

Self Mastery Through Conscious Autosuggestion expands a lot on these ideas but does so quickly. I listened to the book on YouTube at the following link, Emile Coue FULL AUDIOBOOK Self Mastery Through Conscious Autosuggestion – YouTube. Just one hour of listening to an audio book and my life has changed. Many examples of how he “treated” people using autosuggestion are given and with very interesting results. Emile explains that people make suggestions to us with their speech, and we then (unconsciously) decide if we agree. Agreement then changes this suggestion to an autosuggestion to us. We then adopt the feeling. Being around someone negative makes you feel negative because they suggest with actions and speech, negative feelings. You accept this and then you autosuggest that same feeling. Paralysis, rashes, asthma, and many other aliments were cured by Coue’s methods.

Closing This One Out

This short book was everything I expected it to be. It is very simple but written in an educated man’s speech. By trade, Emile Coue was a French pharmacist (chemist) so, he had an education for his day. Prose of this book are not above easy understanding though. Presented in this blog are the main ideas and they come through easily from his text. My daily routine will soon include some autosuggestion because I too am getting better and better in every way, every day.
