Subspecies Was Actually Filmed in a Romanian Castle
A vampire movie actually filmed in castle ruins in Romania, the home of Vlad Dracula? You know this one is about to be good. You are right too and so was the man who recommended this one to me. Subspecies is a very good vampire movie. It had some oddity that made it questionable but overall Subspecies is going on my good movie list. Let’s talk about it.
Unique Storyline in Subspecies
Subspecies storyline is unique and entertaining. Two brother vampires are born and are trying to get a bloodstone which gives them more power. One brother is evil and the other is not. The evil brother of the two looks evil, speaks in a creepy whispering voice, has long outer incisor teeth instead of traditional canine teeth, and Count Orlock long fingers. The father had loved a mortal woman and who was the mother of the brothers. Three students become the target of the evil vampire, one of the students is the love interest of the good brother. Naturally, a struggle and battle over the blood stone and the love of a woman begin.
Great Gothic Elements
This movie is very gothic. As mentioned, it takes place largely in a castle and the ruins of a castle. All these sets are really an old castle and it’s really in Romania too. Graveyards of the fortress are part of the set too. Everything is old and gothic for one huge reason – it really is. Viewers see a festival featuring costumes and masks that commemorates a gypsy who brought peace between the vampires and the mortals. This event is fictitious I believe but is cool.
Rosery Beads and Little Red Minions
Odd and interesting takes on this movie make it unique too. Rosery beads are loaded into shotgun shells and used as a weapon. I don’t think I’ve seen this done before but it makes sense for a vampire movie. The evil brother has some small red minions that look like something from an early Tool video. These little red fellows guard prisoners, free their master from a cage, and serve their vampire master throughout the film. Red minions are a unique take on the vampire monster in this movie.
Classic Vampire Lore & Great Watch
Subspecies is complete with all the lore of stakes, castles, daylight, etc. but has unique parts as well. Plot was not missing in this movie, and it holds your attention the entire time. My friend who recommended this one said that the sequels get continually better in this series. You don’t see that often and so far, he’s been right about what he says. I’m going to watch and blog about at least part II and III soon. If you’ve never seen this movie, it’s worth a watch.
