Venue sign and monster head in the lobby of hotel that hosted mad monster expo 2022 in Charlotte NC

Mad Monster Expo

It has become a tradition for my family to attend the Mad Monster Expo in NC each year. We have been now three years in a row. For those that don’t know, these are events where fans can interact with actors, wrestlers, and many other celebrities. As the name suggests, this one is generally horror themed, but this is not always the case. My wife and I have been collecting signatures now for a while and we have some great memories and cool fan memorabilia as tokens of our adventures together. We went to the Mad Monster Expo primarily for Halloween franchise related signatures this year but, we met some other unique people as well. Let’s talk about Mad Monster Expo hosted in Charlotte, NC.

The Last Dragon, a.k.a. “Bruce Leroy” (1985) is a cult classic in the martial arts film genre. This 1985 classic has a couple of unique characters that really stand out, Bruce Leroy and Grandmaster Sho’nuff the self-proclaimed Shogun of Harlem. There are so many great lines in this film, especially from Sho’nuff. Another accolade to

Prey (2022)

Being born in the 1980s, I am a fan of the Predator character. I remember looking forward to watching this original movie as a child on that channel that had everything at a 5-minute offset (TBS/TNT – can’t remember). It was edited, of course, but still fun to watch. I also remember going to Myrtle Beach one year as a kid and playing laser tag for the first time. This venue allowed you to rent a Predator costume to play in. I was terrified I was going to run into a Predator in this maze and I knew I wasn’t Dutch. With this fandom in mind, I must admit that I was excited about Prey (2022). I did have reservations though and, it was everything I expected it to be. Unfortunately, I didn’t have high expectations. Beware spoilers are ahead.

Play Their Favorites by The Hi-Jivers (2019)

According to Apple Music’s bio on these cats, Austin John and Dawna Zahn, the guitarist and vocalist respectively, moved to Nashville, TN from Central NY in 2014. The two were later joined by Hank Miles and Jason Smay. They had one mission. The same mission that most people who move to Nashville have – to start a successful band. They were inspired by their favorite bands from the 50s and 60s, which were not country western bands. Their influences and loves are American roots icons that include Etta James, Howlin’ Wolf, Little Richard, and Big Mama Thornton. Here’s what I mean about being caught off-guard. As soon as you hit play on this record, you are into what sounds like Big Mama Thornton over Eric Clapton. It’s soulful, it’s bluesy, and it’s right.
