1980 got a great snapshot in this movie. Aerobics are a big thing, and the female ninja is an aerobics instructor. Plenty of aerobic classes take place in this movie. Possession scenes are incredibly cheesy. Arcade cabinets come alive, shoot lasers into the eyes of Lucinda’s character, and the cabinet shakes and rolls around in one of these scenes. Fight scenes are terribly choregraphed and unacceptable at best regarding accuracy. Big hair, tight neon clothes, and crazy eye makeup (especially for the ninjas) are just some of the 80s captured in this movie. Plywood seems to be the construction material of the “Ninja Temple” in which Kosugi must defeat the evil ninja in combat. Said ninja temple has monks practicing what seem to be Chinese martial arts in it too.

Powerful Aikido Demonstration To Open Above the Law

Growing up in the late 80s and early 90s meant I got to see a lot of great action stars on television. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Chuck Norris, Van Damme, you know the names. Another, though, from this era was Steven Segal. Regardless of how you feel about him, the guy is 6’4” and an Aikido master who trained in Japan. He also taught Aikido with blessing in Japan so, he is an accredited martial artist. This is more than can be said of some of the other action stars from the late 80s and early 90s. None of this is the point here. Let’s talk about one of his films from this era called Above the Law.

Starliner Towers is a self-sufficient luxury apartment that hosts all-inclusive living for those who can afford to stay there. Tennis courts, pools, restaurants, general stores, living quarters, dentist offices, etc. are present in this building. Medical facilities are needed in this living area too so, there is a doctor exclusive to the resort. Experiments go hand in hand with medicine in these types of movies. Parasites are being tested to function in place of organs that people need for transplants for the purpose of this movie’s medical experiment. Of course, this doesn’t go as planned and people get infected and become zombies of sorts who want to share the parasites with others. Attempts at escape ensue and there you have the plot for the film, The Shivers.
