Thanksgiving: Balancing Silliness and Scares with a Pilgrim’s Precision

This blog is going to be tricky to write. I have had 2 people ask me how Thanksgiving was but, it’s so tricky answer this question. For someone with my tastes, the answer is one thing. For the general moviegoer, the answer is another. Perhaps writing my thoughts down on Thanksgiving will help me to decide how I want to answer that question. Anyway, you know I’m on board to at least try a holiday-themed slasher movie. Shout out to my boi R5-D4 – I know you would have tagged along without question. Instead, though, I took my wife on a date night. I’m still not sure why she married me much less stayed with me for as long as she has. Let’s get the grease ready and fry this turkey!

Smile – Crazy Make You Think Thriller

A takeaway from this movie that my wife and I discussed the morning after we watched it was the potential representation made in Smile. She practices in the medical field, I have a background in Psychology, and we are both very familiar with anxiety from personal life experiences. As we are also spiritual people, the conversation went to these places. I wonder if Smile in some ways is a good representation of what people who deal with severe anxiety, major depression, or suicidal tendencies feel like. Here’s what I mean. No matter who you talk to, they don’t believe you. A second point is that you can see it but no one else can. Finally, it follows you wherever you go, and you never feel safe. No matter what room you’re in, no matter what conversation you’re having, it smiles and reminds you that it’s still present.

Maximum Overdrive – Wild Ride With the Vehicle Doing the Driving

First, Stephen King did this one so, there’s no question about the quality – yes, it’s 100% awesome. King even makes a cameo in the movie too. Anyway, there are plenty of other cool things about Maximum Overdrive to elaborate on. One is ACDC and their tie to the movie. ACDC is classic American Hard Rock at its best. This band did the soundtrack for Maximum Overdrive and, you know it, the VW bus in this movie is painted with the ACDC logo! Great!

The Lift: A Creepy Descent into Elevator Horror

Let’s put on our ancient Greek robes, grow out our beards, and throw on sandals because we’re going to talk philosophy. Call me Plato and here we go. Most of the horror we watch even when it’s scary, is completely unbelievable. A man who never seems to die in some mask is chasing people and you can’t hide from them. You run, they walk and catch you. Look at a movie like The Ring or this one, The Lift and there’s a different element to it. Sure, elevators are not going to come alive and kill people but it’s the fact that we all use these. We all watch TV. When you start to get into people’s minds and plant what-ifs like in The Lift or The Ring, you mess with their psyche and that’s what I think makes this creepy on a different and effective level.
