Switchblade Sisters (1975)

Switchblade Sisters’ story is interesting, but it isn’t a great movie. The plot revolves around teenage gangs, a common theme in movies from that era. Each gang member dons a leather jacket, has a nickname, and, of course, carries a switchblade. However, the movie adds its own twist: the gangs are separated by gender, with the girls led by Lace and the boys led by her boyfriend. Predictably, tension arises when a new girl, Maggie, enters the scene. Interestingly, it’s the boy who turns out to be the real villain, not Maggie. As the story unfolds and gang warfare breaks out, another group is introduced.

Netherworld (1992)

Moving past my frustrations, the Southern draws and customs in Netherworld stand out as my favorite part. Raised in the South, I’m accustomed to accents, though I’ve seen that others might struggle to understand them. While overseeing a facility in Pennsylvania, I experienced this firsthand. The movie forced me to pay close attention due to the foreign yet pleasant Southern draws. The opening scene, where the owner arrives at his antebellum home by boat, felt both peaceful and impressive.

Escape from New York (1981)

The premise behind Escape from New York is exactly this: escaping from New York City. It’s the why you’re “escaping” that makes the story unique. In this movie, New York City is a walled island and serves as a prison. Donald Pleasence plays the president of the US, who gets captured and held hostage by the inmates inside the walled city prison. An extraction team of one man, played by Kurt Russell, gets sent in to rescue him. Thus, you have the “Escape from New York” idea and the story unfolds from there. I must admit, this premise is out of this world and the movie is excellent on top of it.
